A Tiny Shift Practice
The Pause Rep: A 60-Second Practice for Emotional Reactions
For the moment you notice you've reacted before you'd had time to think.
When to use it
Use this when a conversation brings up frustration, defensiveness, or hurt. You might notice the reaction while it's happening or after you've said something you wish you'd said differently. Both moments offer a chance to practice.
The practice
- 1. Catch the surge. Notice what happens in your body. Your chest tightens, your jaw clenches, your stomach drops, or your voice gets louder or faster. Start by recognizing the signal.
- 2. Name it. Say to yourself, "There's the surge," "There's the frustration," or "There's the loop." Choose the words that feel natural. Naming the reaction helps you notice what's happening without getting pulled further into it.
- 3. Give yourself 60 seconds. Place a hand on your chest if it feels comfortable. Breathe a little slower than you want to. In through your nose, then out through your mouth, letting the exhale last a little longer. Give yourself time to regain access to a steadier response.
- 4. Choose what comes next. You don't need the perfect words. Try saying, "Give me a minute," or "I need to say that differently. Can we do this again?" You might decide to return to the conversation later. The goal is to choose your response instead of reacting automatically. If you remember the steps after the conversation ends, practice then. Noticing afterward still counts.
About 60 seconds. No equipment or quiet room required.
The idea behind it
When stress rises quickly, your reaction often happens before you've had time to think. The Pause Rep helps you recognize the body signals, name what's happening, and give yourself time to choose your response. At first, you might notice the reaction only afterward. Each time you practice, you're strengthening your ability to recognize the pattern. Over time, you might begin catching it earlier.
