Quieting the Mind: Essential Tools to Stop Overthinking

Understanding Overthinking: A Common Challenge

 

As a clinical psychologist, I’ve witnessed firsthand how common and debilitating overthinking can be. It affects our decision-making, fills us with regrets, and alters how we relate to the world—especially in times of global chaos, and that’s now. This mental habit can paralyze even the strongest and healthiest among us. But there’s good news: it doesn’t have to be this way. Let’s explore some research-backed strategies to manage and reduce overthinking.

 

 

Tool #1: Mindful Breathing

 

Don’t be too quick to say “yeah, yeah, I’ve heard this before.” Mindful breathing is more than just taking deep breaths; it’s about anchoring your attention in the present moment and significantly reducing mental clutter, and how it works can be surprising. Here’s what we know: by focusing on your breath, you engage a part of the brain that helps reduce activity in the ‘narrative network’, which is responsible for self-referential thoughts (the “me, me, me” thoughts). This doesn’t stop thoughts completely but shifts your focus to something more grounding and immediate—the breath.

 

 

Practical Steps:

  • Get into a comfortable position, seated or lying down.
  • Start with a few deep breaths to transition from your previous activity.
  • Simply observe your natural breathing pattern without trying to change it. Notice how your body breathes on its own.

This practice may seem like a tug-of-war with your mind at first, as the default mode of overthinking tries to take over. That’s expected. Just gently bring your attention back to your breath. This repetitive action will gradually train your brain to reduce overthinking.

 

 

 

Tool #2: The Four Rs – Recognize, Release, Refocus, Renew

 

The ‘Four Rs’ technique is a transformative approach to shift your thinking patterns that sits at the heart of my therapeutic coaching program – Uncover the Power Within. This is about regaining control of your mental landscape, feeling more confident, and ultimately better than before.

  • Recognize: Notice when you feel emotionally off-balance—whether anxious, agitated, or overwhelmed.
  • Release: Check in with your body for any tension, take a deep breath, and let it go. This helps create more mental space.
  • Refocus: Ask yourself what you need in that moment. It might be a break, a chat with someone, or just some time to think differently about the situation.
  • Renew: This step allows you to approach situations with a refreshed perspective, fostering resilience and adaptability.

 

 

Tool #3: The Four Questions

 

Adapted from Byron Katie’s work, these questions help you challenge and change your thoughts in a way that creates deeper impact:

  • Is this true? Can you absolutely know it’s true?
  • How do I react when I believe this thought? Does it make me anxious, sad, or fearful?
  • Who would I be without this thought? Imagine how freeing it would be not to hold this belief.
  • Can I see a reason to drop this thought? Is there a peaceful reason not to keep this thought around?
