SHOWNOTES

We’ve all heard it—ADHD is about attention, impulsivity, and distraction. But what if we’ve been looking at it the wrong way?

In this episode of The Emotional Longevity Podcast, I sit down with Michael McLeod, a speech-language pathologist and founder of GrowNOW ADHD, with a number of in-person clinics around the country, to explore a radical and refreshing shift: ADHD is less about attention deficits and more about emotional regulation and performance under pressure.

Together, we unpack what’s really going on beneath the surface – and how parents, educators, and individuals can begin to approach ADHD with more compassion, clarity, and results.

Moving Beyond Surface Strategies

One of the most common frustrations with ADHD is the gap between “knowing” and “doing.”

They know the homework is due. They know what steps to take. But they freeze,” Michael explains. “It’s not about motivation—it’s about feeling safe enough to perform.

In this episode, we look at:

✅ Why traditional reward charts and consequences often backfire
✅ How emotional safety is the real foundation for executive function
✅ Why kids with ADHD may shut down rather than act out

And I would say one of my greatest takeaways is how we as parents are often “prompting” our kids to get things done and why this may be one of our greatest mistakes to correct.

Connection Before Correction

We dive deep into what it means to truly support a child (or adult) with ADHD – not through endless productivity hacks, but through authentic connection.

Michael shares how his approach helps kids build internal trust: “It’s not just about fixing a behavior. It’s about helping them feel seen, safe, and capable.

What This Means for You

Whether you’re navigating ADHD as a parent, teacher, therapist—or in your own life—this conversation offers a refreshing roadmap:

✅ Look beyond compliance.
✅ Cultivate emotional safety.
✅ Trust that regulation comes before performance.

Final Thoughts: Emotional Safety Before Strategy

This episode is a reminder that when it comes to growth – whether in children or adults – emotional safety always comes first. Lasting change doesn’t come from fixing or forcing; it comes from being seen, supported, and understood. When we feel safe enough to try, we can finally access the confidence, focus, and resilience that’s been there all along.
