Considering Our Words Before Speaking

We’ve all experienced a moment when we’ve said something, and as the last syllables leave our lips, our brain has figured out we put our foot in our mouth. We instantly wish we could take the unkind or thoughtless words back, but it’s too late. The fact is we’re often not considering our words or thinking before speaking. However, it’s important to recognize that words become actions, and actions become consequences. Unfortunately, the consequences of our words may cause relationship disharmony, ruin a business deal, or reinforce unhealthy mind traps. But what if there’s a way to prevent it?

Just consider, what would the days, weeks and months ahead look like if before speaking we considered three questions:

  • Is it true?

  • Is it necessary?

  • Is it kind?

These are questions that are inspired by the world’s wisdom traditions, and have great relevance to our relationships in our families, friendships, business, and education today.

In this emerging world, with a vibrant social environments where we are quick to fire off texts, tweets, and Facebook messages, it’s more important than ever to consider these questions.  In fact, when we are typing we can take our time to pause and choose words with more care.

But I challenge you to bring this wisdom and kindness into your lives at home, work, and interactions on the internet. Before speaking (or expressing yourself online), consider your words.

Why not practice something that not only will make you feel good, but encourage others to do the same?

Imagine the ripple effects.

I encourage you to try this and feel free to share your experiences, thoughts, or questions with us below.

Warmly,
