21 Days of Purpose: A Free eCourse for Uncovering Happiness

You have a purpose in being here…
… and part of that is remembering that
you are part of something much larger than yourself.


Science and thousands of years of human experience are showing us a feeling of connection to something greater than ourselves gives us a heightened sense of well-being and resiliency. In short, it’s a natural antidepressant.

I want to invite you to an experiment based on practices in my new book, Uncovering Happiness, that can help you nurture this positive shift in your brain and positively impact the world around you.


Over the next 21 days you’ll be guided through something very simple and profound; discovering a prosocial purpose and turning your purpose into a verb.


The structure for this is loose; there is nothing strict or rigid about this program. The intention of the following 21 days is to deepen your connection to purpose and compassion in your own life and get some support in the process.

Each day you’ll receive a writing to reflect on to light up the compassionate brain. You’ll then be reminded of these three key questions from Uncovering Happiness to help keep you focused and on track:

  1. What pro-social purpose are you involved in?
  2. What action can I take today that is in line with this purpose?
  3. What is this action in service of that is greater than myself?

I recommend weaving in some of the attitudes of play from Uncovering Happiness in order not to get overly serious about the whole endeavor, see it more from a learning lens and make it a playful endeavor.


A very wise woman once told me,
If something is valuable, give it away.


That may sound strange, but I understand what she means. As we give away what is valuable, we inevitably get back something invaluable.

    I want to learn how to use earths natural gifts for health and healing.
    I need to identify sources of information and seek out a community of likeminded people. Success in this area will help me meet people who share my interest, give me a reason to set aside more time to enjoy nature, give me the gift of knowledge that I can pass along to loved ones and improve the quality of life for myself and others.

    I want to bring more compassion and kindness into the world. I want to do it with both my time, my smile ☺ and my money. Give a hand when it is needed. I support a couple of charities every month and help family and friends in a developing country. I have followed the wonderful Mindfulness Summit, where I listened to you and most of the other teachers – to learn and get inspired. Such a great event! I have meditated every day in October and my son confirms that I have become more calm. I have meditated now and then since I took a 8 weeks meditation course in 2001. But now I am convinced that I have to stick to a formal practice for the rest of my life. And even more important, get it into my daily life with semi-formal and unformal practices. ☺ Me and my 11 year old son have started to write a journal; the day’s positive experiences (the rose according to Kristen Race) gratitude and acts of kindness. I have given hugs and a smile to friends and strangers. It makes me very happy to bring a small positive act to another person. ☺ Thank you Elisha for offering this course to reflect on how to live my life and for contributing to a better world.

    Day 2. In addition to making kindness my prosocial purpose I also need to be more compassionate toward myself. I’m compassionate to others, no problem, but very hard on myself. Waiting for my book to arrive!

    Not sure if this is the place to share my intentional activity for the next days…but, I would like to be on the look out for opportunities to offer a kind or supporting word (i.e., check out person in market, any person with whom I come into contact, friend or stranger.)

    My commitment for this project and beyond is to bring connection and compassion to as many people as I can each and every day. Look another in the eye during a conversation…. or just look a passerby in the eye with a twinkle and a smile…. as you casually go down the street. Give kind or polite jestures throughout the day and watch how pleasantly surprised the other person responds. If I see another in need…. I love to help……. even as small as reaching to the top shelf, helping another through a busy parking lot, having a quick conversation with the cashier about her beautiful manicure…….. the opportunities are endless every day. As a newly retired person it is so satisfying to know that for the rest of my life, I can simply exist to help others.

    I start every day by thanking the Universe for the gift of one more day to try again. Then I ask for assistance in whatever I am feeling I might need. It is usually to be patient, forgiving and positive with myself and everyone I meet. I am working on giving honest compliments to at least one person a day. My goal is to donate a bit more money this year to the charities that help. I am working on lessening my need to control situations and people. Letting things happen as they may is so freeing. Thank you for the opportunity to try the 21 days of purpose.

    Well, I think i’m all over the map. I wake up and think too much about things that bother me. I do work full time and am busy, but I’m searching for ways to calm my mind and be happy. Right now I am a good listener and I try and smile at others, but I’m struggling with my own stuff.

    I started out yesterday with the purchase of Uncovering Happiness although I haven’t started to read it yet I know it was a step in the right direction because I’m aware of my need for self compassion. I decided to start off yesterday with a smile to a complete stranger and in return they smiled back. I went through the rest of the day smiling even at work where I didn’t wanna smile but I did anyway. Every person I smile at returned the smile I felt great. So I started today out with a text to my daughter reminding her to smile even when she didn’t want to because it would make people feel good. I also shared with her that I knew this to be true because whenever I picture her smile it makes smile.

    My morning mindful moment is to take the long route to the office and feel that deep connection with nature, drinking in the sights, sounds, aromas and the beautiful green-ness which is the real world for me.

    I start each day with my children on my mind. At age 13 and 15, they are seeking independence and trying out new ways of relating all the time (not all of them particularly social, in my view!). So I start each day consciously intending to be open to their individuality, to their wisdom, to be grateful for them, really see them and to respond rather than react… On good days I also pray for their wellbeing and for their safety as well. And on really good days, I include a short compassion meditation where I extend lovingkindness to them and to all people. It helps a lot when I include a reminder to myself that I can be imperfect at this parenting gig too… and I’ll get another chance to get it right tomorrow 🙂
