21 Days of Purpose: A Free eCourse for Uncovering Happiness

You have a purpose in being here…
… and part of that is remembering that
you are part of something much larger than yourself.


Science and thousands of years of human experience are showing us a feeling of connection to something greater than ourselves gives us a heightened sense of well-being and resiliency. In short, it’s a natural antidepressant.

I want to invite you to an experiment based on practices in my new book, Uncovering Happiness, that can help you nurture this positive shift in your brain and positively impact the world around you.


Over the next 21 days you’ll be guided through something very simple and profound; discovering a prosocial purpose and turning your purpose into a verb.


The structure for this is loose; there is nothing strict or rigid about this program. The intention of the following 21 days is to deepen your connection to purpose and compassion in your own life and get some support in the process.

Each day you’ll receive a writing to reflect on to light up the compassionate brain. You’ll then be reminded of these three key questions from Uncovering Happiness to help keep you focused and on track:

  1. What pro-social purpose are you involved in?
  2. What action can I take today that is in line with this purpose?
  3. What is this action in service of that is greater than myself?

I recommend weaving in some of the attitudes of play from Uncovering Happiness in order not to get overly serious about the whole endeavor, see it more from a learning lens and make it a playful endeavor.


A very wise woman once told me,
If something is valuable, give it away.


That may sound strange, but I understand what she means. As we give away what is valuable, we inevitably get back something invaluable.

    At the first of the 21 days to go, I set as my purpose to be mindfully kind – especially towards those who would otherwise upset me and make me angry, reacting in not a gentle and kind and loving way. This will naturally lead to a positive response and will create an ever developing upward spiral. By doing so I believe I will be helping create a kinder world for us all.     Good Morning, my morning ritual is to give thanks for being alive, being safe and being well and I ask ‘Michael’ to continue to keep us all safe and well in what ever we do during the day. To try to be mindfully aware during the day I often will look up from the computer and focus on the mountain range in the distance just to still my mind from the daily chatter that goes on there.

    As I come into consciousness in the early morning, I keep my eyes closed and begin with an inner focus of gratitufe for the first breath I take. In rythmn with my breath, I visualize and pray for friends and family who could really use loving support. I end with a prayer of gratitude for all of my blessings, known and unknown.

    My action in service of that which is greater than myself is to spread more kindness, love and compassion in the world. Starting with myself, extending this outward to my immediate family and friends and then further out into our world. The actions can be small but performed with love. I’m not rich but can sometimes make small donations to worthy charities, and certainly to the refugee crisis we have at the moment. I also belong to a group called Making A Difference, set up by two personal friends who run a centre for vulnerable children in Kenya. Presently I’m writing a Children’s book (the story of one of the children at the centre in Kenya) to promote awareness of the lives of these children, the differences and similarities between a child in Kenya and say, a child in England and how we all need the same things, kindness and compassion, to feel loved.

    Usually I will take 10 breaths to get focused; if I lose concentration I begin again. Usually I align my in breath with a metta intention, such as
    in breath “May I be free of anger” out breath “May all be free of anger-hatred.” I might make intentions of forgiveness, wishing peace, sending love to all, especially the poor and those suffering, sometimes picturing the person/persons I am well-wishing. I imagine the in breath as taking in the light above body-mind and the out breath as allowing that light to permeate me and extend to interconnected being. Then I sit quietly for 10-15 minutes allowing whatever/welcoming whatever arises in my consciousness but noting when I get carried away by stories or planning, etc.

    Day 1. I just ordered your book, waiting for it to arrive so will start without it! “Kindness is my religion”. Oh! Did I steal that line from someone? 😉 I’m afraid kindness is in short supply these days and I believe we can never be too kind.

    Hi! I’m from India, so one of the first things I do in the morning is Yoga. The first pose is the ‘Human pose’, where you stand erect and well balanced, hands joined, and sense the joy and dignity of being human. I find this a defining moment, and seek to continue this feeling through all the other poses that follow.

    Leading a very busy life at this moment, I find a useful practice is to drop my attention from my head to my feet and really feel them. This can easily be done when talking to people and it reminds me to be mindful and aware.

    In the morning I like to pray for my spiritual growth, and for my current concerns. I also have a list of people for whom I pray. I pray for their health and personal well being and for help with their difficulties. I also read a short inspiring reading. Then start the day.
