Before Debating Clinton or Trump Ask Yourself these Three Questions

In the United States we’re heading into a potential turbulent political atmosphere that has the potential to be disrupting to even our closet relationships.

You may remember from past elections, it’s that moment we say something about some candidate or issue and as the last syllables leave our lips our brain has figured out that we have just ignited a fire that we won’t be able to put out. The fact is, especially when something is emotionally charged, we often time don’t think before we speak. Our words become actions and actions become consequences. Unfortunately the consequences land us in relationship problems, a blown business deal, or just the general reinforcement of unhealthy mind traps.

But there’s a way to optimize the way we communicate in this political climate.

Just consider, what would the days, weeks and months ahead look like if before we all spoke about politics we considered three questions:

Is it true?
Is it necessary?
Is it kind?

This is not to encourage you not to speak about political issues, it’s just a way to clarify a particular approach that might save a relationship or two.

These a questions that one might say are inspired by the world’s wisdom traditions and have great relevance to our relationships in our families, friendships, business, and education today.

In this emerging world where we’re quick to fire off texts, tweets, Snapchats and Facebook messages, it might be more important than ever to consider these questions. In fact, you might argue that we have more space to do so if we’re typing something out.

But I challenge you to bring this into your lives at home, work and within the internet.

Why not practice something that not only will make you feel good, but encourage others to do the same.

Imagine the ripple effects.
